The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) is appalled at the barbaric action of some rail commuters who stripped naked a female train driver, hit her with a brick, and dragged her into bushes during the ongoing attacks on trains along the Pretoria to Pienaarsport corridor, the commission said. Minister in the Presidency Responsible for Women Bathabile Dlamini has urged South African women to celebrate Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s legacy by taking up the baton and continuing the fight against gender-based discrimination, rape, patriarchy and gender-based violence. The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) has called for immediate action against sexual harassment in the workplace, in the light of sexual harassment allegations against a former head of forensics at accounting firm Grant Thornton Johannesburg. The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) has congratulated Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng on her appointment as the second female black vice-chancellor of the University of Cape Town (UCT) in the institution’s history since its establishment in 1829. “This appointment of Professor Phakeng as the second black woman vice-chancellor of UCT will serve as an inspiration to women in academia that gender parity can be realised if women can be afforded opportunities such as these,” the commission said in a statement on Sunday.
