CGE condemns the assault of 75 – year old Sarona Maremele Mampuru

The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) condemns the assault on Mme Sarona Maremele Mampuru, a 75 – year old woman from Mamone village in Limpopo allegedly by Serake Mampuru and Billy Mampuru. The battered and brutally bruised face of Mme Mampuru is indicative of little regard the alleged perpetrators had on the rights and the dignity of Mme Mampuru. The Commission has through its outreach and legal clinic campaigns come to realise that the most vulnerable people of our society continue to bear the brunt of gender-based violence, as it is also the case with Mme Mampuru.

The Commission of Gender Equality is also aware of a rumours allegedly being attributed to the alleged perpetrators that Mme Mampuru must leave Mamone village. The Commission believes that this goes against her rights of choosing where she wants to belong, and her dignity as espoused in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa. The Commission requests the South African Police Services (SAPS) to urgently investigate these rumours. If indeed these rumours are true, the alleged perpetrators must therefore be send back to court until their next court appearance on the 20th February 2019 or finalisation of the case against them

The Commission would be monitoring this case in order to ensure that there is justice for Mme Mampuru
