Media Release For immediate Release:  28 May 2019 To: Editors, Producers and Reporters   Bonuses offered to Banyana Banyana a right step in bridging wage gap in football In a country where, women earn 23% less as compared to their male counterparts, the announcement by South African Football Association (SAFA) President Dr Danny Jordaan that Banyana Banyana players going to the World Cup in France will receive the same bonus structure with Bafana Bafana is a step in the right direction. The Commission for Gender Equality hails SAFA’s efforts in bridging the wage disparity in football. Although, the Commission acknowledges that this endeavour is not enough in ensuring that the playing fields are equal when it comes to the remuneration of both women and men football such an initiative is welcomed as it begins to address the anomalies that had existed for far too long. The Commission has been concerned that despite the gallant display and being the pride of the nation Banyana Banyana were underpaid. It is for this reason the Commission for Gender Equality engaged both the South African Football Association and the Department of Sports and Recreation to address the issue of wage gap between Banyana Banyana and Bafana Bafana. The Commission also lauds the sponsors that came on board in assisting to quell the injustice that was happening in terms of remuneration of equal pay for equal work for the forthcoming World Cup and African Cup of Nations for Banyana Banyana and Bafana Bafana respectively. The Commission will continue to engage both SAFA and the Department of Sports and Recreation in order to address the issue of wage gap in South African football.
