Press Release For Immediate release: 28 January 2018 CGE mourns the passing away of Mama Cecilie Lynette Palmer The Acting Chairperson of the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE), Ms Tamara Mathebula) on behalf of the Commission sends her heartfelt condolences to the African National Congress (ANC), family, friends and relatives of the late Mama Cecilie Lynette Palmer. She will be missed by those who had embraced her as the human rights and gender activist icon and in particular the Commission for Gender Equality that has worked closely with Mama Palmer in advancing gender equality and women empowernment. In 2016, the CGE created a platform for Mama Palmer as part of the ex-prisoners who facilitated an intergenerational dialogue that sought to impart and share knowledge amongst women of various groupings including school children. Ms Palmer was detained and spent many years for fighting for human rights in the Fort Prison, where the Commission on Gender Equality in now housed. Her memories of what ex-political prisoners fought for, was intended to achieve for the liberation and empowerment of women of this country, will remain central to the work of the CGE. Mama Palmer was a true heroine of our struggle, who despite having gone through trials and tribulations continued to fight for our freedom. Following her retirement from serving in many political structures such as the United Democratic Front (UDF), the Federation of Transvaal Women (FEDTRAW) and non-governmental organisations like the Legal Resource Centre (LRC), she continued to be involved in various charity organisations. It is through heroines like her that today we have CGE, which has to ensure that whatever she fought for should not be in vain. “As the Commission, we mourn and henceforth celebrate the life well spent. Indeed, her passing away will surely be missed across the country”, says Ms Tamara Mathebula, Acting chairperson of the Commission for Gender Equality On behalf of the Commission for Gender Equality, we say your memory and what you laboured for will be missed. Rest in Peace! Robala ka khotso! Lala ngo Xolo, Mama Cecilie Lynette Palmer!
